Environmental impacts arise on all construction projects,
irrespective of the location, size or nature of the development, and
have the potential to affect the surrounding communities, as well
as the natural and built environment.Impacts can take many forms, such as noise or pollution, and can affect surrounding flora and fauna.
CIRIA’s popular Environmental good practice on site guide was
first published in 1999 and the latest 4th edition (C741) reflects
changes in legislation, developments in practice and emergence of new topics that the industry needs to consider. These include Building Information Modelling (BIM), sustainable
procurement, Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR), water
footprinting, resource efficiency and the circular economy all of
which will influence site practice in the short, medium and long-term.
The updated guide is a user friendly reference tool and training
aid providing practical advice about managing construction on
site to minimise environmental impacts. It is relevant to all
concerned within the construction process.
The guide reinforces the importance of robust project planning and a collaborative approach to enable environmental issues to be positively managed, and that the whole project team and construction supply chain have responsibilities for good environmental management.
Gareth Brown, Programme Area Manager, WRAP and Chair of
CIRIA Project Steering Group commented: “The Environmental
good practice on site guide is a popular, practical and accessible
guide. It’s been a pleasure to be involved with this publication since
the 2nd edition and to now see the 4th edition become a reality.
“Revising this guide to ensure its relevance to the evolving
environmental agenda has again been supported by a steering
group of industry experts and an excellent research contractor
who’s efforts, as always exceed
expectations.”
