With the countdown to the Energy related Products (ErP) Directive getting closer, Paul Clancy, Managing Director of Baxi Potterton Myson in Ireland explains what it will mean for installers and how it will affect them.
What is ErP?
ErP is a new directive which comes into force this September,
meaning boilers and renewable heating equipment will be given
an efficiency rating.
The directive comprises Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Regulations for Lot 1 (space heaters and combi space heaters) and Lot 2 (water
heaters). This will mean two things.
1. Ecodesign – any product that
does not meet certain efficiency
requirements will not get a CE
mark, and will, therefore, not be
legally available for sale.
2. Energy Labelling – will mean
that each space and water heater
will come with an efficiency rating
and label, from G to A+++.
How does this affect installers?
The directive means more than just a label on the side of a boiler
– it will affect the way that installers carry out their jobs.
ErP covers all heating and hot water products, but when it
comes to boilers, the scope of ErP is limited to domestic and
commercial products with an output lower than 400kW. Any
boilers that aren’t ErP compliant, will be banned, so it’s essential
installers are aware of what they can legally install.
Why is the legislation being
introduced?
The Legislation has been introduced as part of the EU’s
commitment to reducing energy consumption by 20 per cent and
increasing the share of renewable energies by 20 per cent.
