Accounting for half of UK energy demand, affordable heat is vital for industry and householders alike.

Heat is too often the Cinderella of the energy debate, but its central role makes it a key consideration if we are to meet our decarbonisation commitments. Now is its second year, Heat 2013 has been established as the place to debate and explore all aspects of heat. Organised by the Energy Institute and CHPA, Heat 2013 will bring together, Government policy makers and industry leaders from DECC, National Grid, the Green Investment Bank, Mitsubishi Electric and E.ON, These thought leaders will explore how we can deliver on the potential for affordable, low carbon heat set out in the Government’s 2013 Heat Strategy. Heat is the biggest element of our energy consumption, accounting for 46% of final energy consumed in the UK. In terms of market share, gas reigns supreme: in the domestic and industrial markets, about 80% of all heat used today is sourced from gas. Looking ahead, the Government’s Heat Strategy foresees a very different future, with district heating and heat pumps displacing gas in our homes and offices, and carbon removed from industry through a combination of bioenergy, CHP and CCS. The contrast between the reality of today’s heat market and the vision of 2050 could not be more stark; it puts the transformation of the electricity sector in the shade. Today, about 2% of homes are connected to a heat network, under 50,000 use a heat pump and renewables provide only 1% of UK heat. Get set for Heat 2013 on 27 Nov 2013 and book your ticket now at www.heatconference.co.uk
