Brett Martin has supplied polycarbonate roof lights for the construction of the transparent canopy of the newly refurbished Olympic Park Stadium ahead of 2015 Rugby World Cup

Redeveloped by main contractor Balfour Beatty on behalf of the London Legacy Development Corporation, the iconic London stadium features one of the largest spanning tensile roofs in the world and incorporates 87 tonnes of Marlon CS Longlife polycarbonate, manufactured by County Antrim based Brett Martin Ltd.

The redevelopment of the stadium, which will host five games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, involved doubling the size of the original roof structure to cover all of the 54,000 spectator seating in the venue. Brett Martin’s team, headed up by Technical Services Manager, Michael Johnston, worked alongside architects, Populous to develop a light weight design solution which would offer the necessary versatility to be configured to fit the complex concentric structure of the new stadium roof.

Making the architectural vision a reality, a total of 4,484 individual Marlon CS Longlife clear polycarbonate roof light sheets, manufactured in a specified stadia profile and cut to size within Brett Martin’s County Antrim production facility, were supplied to construct the stadiums roof canopy.

“We are incredibly proud to have supplied a critical component in the construction of the roof canopy in the London Olympic Stadium Transformation Project. The project is a feat of production and delivery logistics and upon completion of the stadium, we have demonstrated our technical excellence and expertise in the delivery of specialist and large scale roof lighting projects,” commented William Martin, Production Manager at Brett Martin’s Marlon CS plant.

“Working closely with the project architects and contractors, we were able to provide substantial technical assistance and guidance, helping the project teams find the best roofing solution for the redevelopment of the stadium. Marlon CS Longlife polycarbonate roof lights transmit over 90% of natural daylight to create an open air feel and a stunning backdrop for the live sporting events which the stadium will host.”

Revered for their strength to weight ratio, impact resistance, transparency and long term weatherability, the Marlon Polycarbonate roof light sheets were manufactured in the Newtownabbey plant before being palletised in the order of installation and shipped to the construction site across the 12 week period of installation.

Following the Rugby World Cup games throughout October, the stadium will close for one last time to allow completion of its final phase where the multipurpose site will be home to West Ham United Football Club as well as the new national center for athletics.
