Container For Low Cost Living

Eco ICID flues – manufactured by innovative chimney manufacturers Schiedel Chimney Systems Ltd – have been used in a charity project converting a redundant shipping container to create Ireland’s first shipping container home.

Known as Project Ripple, the container was transformed in the grounds of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, in Kilmainham. The fully completed home was donated to the society of St. Vincent de Paul to support their work with the homeless. This hostel currently provides shelter and emergency accommodation to homeless men across County Cork.

Sean Byrne,Schiedel Area Sales Manager, said; “This is one of the more unusual projects which we have been involved in. We were delighted to be able to support this charitable project, the first of its kind in the Republic of Ireland.” The flue was chosen specifically as it benefits from a wide range of fittings and adaptors to offer flexibility and to tie in with any solid fuel appliance. The aim from the start was to achieve a passive or near passive home. Schiedel worked with Hugh Whiriskey of Partel, an Air Tightness Test and Heat Recovery Specialist, and Mark Shirley of 2eva who undertook periodic air tightness tests to achieve an Air Tightness of 0.5 air changes per hour and insulation levels that will meet the passive house standards.
