The 2013 Construction Manager of the Year (CMYA) Award has been won by Thomas O’Connor of Collen Construction for his work on managing the construction of three Eirgrid & ESB
substations over a 12 month period.
Thomas received his title at the CMYA awards dinner, held in the Conrad Hotel, Dublin, on 7th June. Reaching their conclusion, the adjudicators stated that Thomas is a construction manager with exceptional technical capability and in addition, an ability to communicate effectively with ALL members of his design and build team. During the project the design and build remit involved intense deliberation with the network suppliers, the design teams, the procurement and shipping process, and three construction teams on three sites. For outstanding commitment to achieving the client’s goal, the ability to knock the necessary bureaucratic heads together, keeping the design team on target and overseeing the construction on three separate sites and completion on schedule earned him, in the opinion of the adjudication panel, the Overall Award of Construction Manager of the Year 2013. It was a night of winners, with 4 Gold, 3 Silver, 4 Bronze and 1 Commendation awarded in a number of categories (see next page for full details of winners). The adjudicators said the standard and quality of entries was of an exceptionally high standard with each winner truly deserving of their award. The presentation of the awards was made by Duncan Stewart RIAI, who also spoke about how the future of the construction industry lies within our ability to utilise existing buildings and the need to upgrade to the highest ecological standards to adhere to EU requirements and improve our carbon footprint within the industry. The night itself would not have taken place without the support of the CMYA sponsors and many joined the ceremony on the night to celebrate the awards. Representatives from Kingspan, Kilsaran, Techrete, Modern Builder, E-Tec, Fendor, Hilti and Jan Janssens all enjoyed the evening with the winners. Previous winner Donal McCarthy also attended for the handover of the perpetual trophy together with the assessors and adjudicators, Gillian Fletcher, Louis Gunnigan, Elina Bychkova, Gerry O’Neill, Vincent McCarthy, Allan McMullen and Dermot Russell. CMYA congratulate all of the winners and hope that they will continue to inspire others within the industry. The level of skill among construction managers in Ireland, North and South, is renowned the world over. They are widely respected and hugely competent individuals who continue to shine during a dull era within the industry.

Founded in 1964 by the late Patrick McKeown in the village of Kilsaran in County Louth, Kilsaran International has grown considerably to become Ireland’s largest independent maker of a range of concrete products. This family-owned and run business is quite literally Irish from the ground up, mining raw materials from its own quarries before making superior quality paving and walling, road surfacing materials, pre-mixed mortars, renders, screeds and, of course, ready-mixed concrete and blocks at its own manufacturing facilities across Leinster. The company has supplied many of the country’s landmark construction projects including the Aviva Stadium, T2 at Dublin Airport, the Convention Centre Dublin. Recently the company has re-branded in order to reflect its diverse product range and to build on its growing exports to the UK. Hilti, with its headquarters located in Schaan, Liechtenstein was founded in 1941 by Martin Hilti. Since then Hilti has grown from a small family company to the global “Hilti Group” comprising 22,000 employees in 120 different countries. Hilti supplies leading-edge technology to the global construction market and excels through outstanding innovation, top quality direct customer relations and effective marketing. The company creates enthusiastic customers by living its values of integrity, courage, teamwork and commitment which forms the basis for a unique corporate culture. “Sharing the same purpose, the same values and goals, acting as a worldwide team has given the company strength – in good as well as in difficult times.” Michael Hilti Hilti upholds a clear value orientation and pursues a policy of stakeholder value. Integrating the interests of all the company’s partners – customers, suppliers and employees – into its strategy and actively honoring its social and ecological responsibility creates the foundation of trust that makes pos sible the long-term success of the company. The Hilti organisation in Ireland has its HQ located in Finglas, Dublin. In these offices, the Customer Service, Marketing and Credit Depart ments are focused on supporting customers, and the field based sales and engineering teams. Additionally the four Hilti- Centers provide a local sales and service center in Dublin, Belfast and Cork. Voted as the number one Great Place to Work 2011 and number two in 2012, the Irish organisation is focused to provide superior solutions and service to the Irish construction industry. 2013 marks the 51st anniversary of the establishment of The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in Ireland. With over 43,000 members worldwide in more than 100 countries the
CIOB is the home for construction professionals around the world.
In Ireland, the CIOB has approximately 3,000 members operating in five centres around the country. Members come from all areas of construction and related disciplines. We have a very active Novus group and also a large student membership. CIOB are now in the 18th year of the running of this prestigious competition. Initially, the award was known as the Building Manager of the Year, but was changed eight years ago to the title Construction Manager of the Year. The move from Building Manager of the Year was driven by the introduction of the new Civil Engineering category, recognising the skills and abilities of individuals working on critical elements of Irish infrastructure. Since then the Green Building category has also been introduced to incorporate the great advances which have been made in this sector in recent years. This competition recognises the ability of managers in the construction industry to deliver projects on time, within budget and to very demanding standards. This award celebrates the excellence of these individuals in the construction industry. The competition is overseen by a panel of independent assessors and adjudicators who themselves are highly respected members of the construction industry or recently retired from that industry. These panel members give of their time and experience freely in order to ensure that a thorough examination of all entries is made and that the assessing and adjudicating processes are followed according to the strictest guidelines. Indications of the calibre of recent projects which have won this competition are: • The Square Shopping Centre, Jervis Street Shopping Centre and Dundrum Shopping Centre in Dublin. • Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Newbridge and Intel in Lexlip. • The Helix at DCU and the Conway Institute at UCD Dublin. • Georges Quay development in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Ferry Terminal. • Pier C at Dublin Airport. • lmpark Development in Merrion Road in Dublin. • National Convention Centre, Dublin. The Construction Manager of the Year competition represents a challenge for the contestants to accurately identify their overall role in the completion of the complex and involved projects for which they have made an entry into this competition. The initial stages of the competition are paper based. Those who make it to the final are then invited, by the adjudicators, to interview. As part of the interview the project is inspected to establish the management challenges presented. The adjudication panel then have the unenviable task of putting the finalists into order and selecting prize winners. The very high level of management expertise in Ireland gives them an extremely difficult job, and year on year the standard of entry continues to rise. The success of the CMYA is due in no small part to the wonderful support which the event receives from the sponsors. This year’s event has attracted many high profile sponsors from all backgrounds both from within the construction industry and also from outside of it. CIOB consider all of their finalists to be winners and agree that they deserve the respect and admiration of their industry for the excellent work which they do.
